Dozens gathered in front of the Belarusian embassy in Riga on Wednesday, to support opposition protests across the border following Belarus' presidential election.

People gathered on the stairs of the embassy building, clapping and shouting chants such as “Freedom” in Russian, and “Long life Belarus” in Belarusian. Protesters were also holding posters in English reading, 'Run Lukashenko run”, “Belarus deserves change” and “Belarusian lives matter.” Some held Belarusian flags.

“This is a very emotional day for me. I feel like I am going through 1991, Georgia in 2008, and 2014 in Kiev. I hope there won't be so much blood in Belarus. Long live Belarus! Long live the people who have suffered so much,” said a member of the European Parliament for Latvia, Sandra Kalniete, at the rally.
According to official data, around 6,000 people have been detained throughout the country since the vote. The Interior Ministry also said that one protester had died on Monday during the demonstrations in Minsk.

According to the country's Central Election Commission, incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko, who has been in power in Belarus since 1994, won the August 9 election with more than 80 percent of the ballots. His closest opponent Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the wife of Belarusian opposition figure and blogger Sergei Tikhanovsky, received 10.09 percent of the vote. She has since fled the country for Lithuania.
